Hearing the voices of saints by the age of 12, young Joan believed that God was sending her on a mission to free France from the English. After convincing the French king of her calling, she was given a small army and the status of captain. She had many victories and she stood at the king’s side when he was crowned. She was later captured and sold to the English. When she wouldn’t take back her statements that it was the saints who called her, she was condemned to death as a witch and heretic and burned at the stake. She was 19.
