Created by Hephaestos, Pandora was the first woman to live amoung men. She was given a sealed box as a gift from the gods but was told never to open it. Her curiosity eventually got the better of her and she peeked inside. By disobeying the gods, she released sorrow, despair, envy and all the plagues of man upon the world. She tried to quickly to close the box but it was too late. All that was left in the bottom of the box was hope showing that no matter what ills befall us, hope never leaves. Her name means "all gifts", good and bad.
